Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves fitted inside the intake manifold of many diesel engines. Their job is to create a swirling motion in the incoming air at low RPM to improve combustion efficiency. The problem is that the mounting screws and flap mechanisms can fail over time, and when they do, the broken pieces get sucked into the engine - causing catastrophic damage to pistons, valves, and cylinder heads.
This is a well-known issue on BMW diesel engines (M47 and M57), certain Vauxhall CDTi engines, and some Audi/VW TDI units. Many owners choose to have the swirl flaps removed as a preventative measure before they fail, rather than waiting for the worst to happen.
